Porcelain Dental Crowns – Bringing Damaged Teeth Back to Life

I have had patients come to me with huge metal fillings around which their teeth are crumbling. They have come to me with teeth that have cracked in ways that seemed they could never be repaired. And they have come to see me because of molars that were so worn down and short that there was hardly any tooth left above the gum line. Many of them weren’t sure that they could be helped at all. Others worried that their teeth would have to be pulled and replaced with an implant.

While I do find, occasionally, that a patient would benefit from an extraction and replacement, more often that not, my patients are relieved to find that we can easily solve their problems with a dental crown.

What is a Dental Crown?

If you aren’t sure what  dental crowns are, let me take a minute to explain them to you. Crowns – also called caps – are used to protect weak teeth. How? Dental crowns, unlike fillings, inlays or onlays, cover the entire surface of your tooth, acting in a way, as brand new, undamaged tooth surfaces. I use crowns when teeth are badly damaged because crowns can even hold a cracked or crumbling tooth together!  The are also used to repair extensive decay, protect a root canal, to anchor a bridge and act  as the new tooth on an implant. Furthermore, crowns are the best and strongest repair solution for those who grind or clench their teeth.

How Do You Place a Dental Crown?

To place a crown, we start by taking x-rays and examining the tooth for damage that extends into the roots. If there is damage or bacteria present in the pulp of the tooth, I may advice a root canal to ensure that there is no infection brewing under the crown and to prevent the excruciating pain that comes from an abscess. After your examination, we prepare your tooth to receive the crown by shaping and roughing up the surface of the tooth. Then I’ll take a mold of the tooth and surrounding areas of your mouth and send these molds to my dental lab for custom fabrication of the crown. I will also send specific instructions on the shading and appearance of your crown so that it is indistinguishable from your other teeth. We’ll place a temporary crown and in about two weeks you’ll come back for permanent placement of your specially designed tooth restoration.

What Are Your Crowns Made Of?

Each of my dental crowns are custom made, just for you, of pure porcelain so there is no dark line at the gums and no dull, flat-white look. I use only the best labs and they create crowns that look so much like your natural teeth, you may forget which teeth were restored and which weren’t!

In fact, his list of involvements is just too long to print. He is always getting involved in the idea of helping people and giving something back to his beloved community. And when Dr. Mitchmore gets excited about a project, everyone around him feels it and gets passionate about giving back too. In fact, in 2008 he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation and holds an Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Mastership.

Dr. Mitchmore is certified in IV sedation and has advanced dental education from the Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, the Center for Professional Development in Scottsdale, Arizona, The Dawson Academy of St. Petersburg, Florida and is one of only 700 doctors worldwide to have completed the full Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Cosmetic Studies (LVI) curriculum.
